Winter Travel Tips

During the upcoming winter season there are many delights to look forward to, including holiday decorating, preparing and cooking special holiday feasts, wintry weather and traveling to see family and friends. It is important to remember these vital safety tips to keep you and your family warm and safe during the winter holiday season.

  • If you must travel during a storm, inform someone of the travel route, destination and expected arrival time.
  • Keep a disaster supply kit in the car.
  • Place a winter emergency kit in each car that includes a shovel, windshield scraper, flashlight, battery powered radio, extra batteries, water, snack food, extra hats and mittens, first aid kit, blanket, tow chain or rope, road salt and sand, booster cables, emergency flares, extra clothing and fluorescent distress flag.
  • Keep cars and other vehicles fueled and in good repair. Winterize your car by checking your car battery, ignition system, thermostat, lights, flashers, exhaust, heater, brakes, defroster and tires. Ensure that your car has adequate antifreeze, windshield washer fluid and oil and check regularly throughout the season.
  • If traveling by car during a winter weather advisory or winter storm watch, do so in daylight. Don't travel alone and keep others informed of your schedule and route, and stay on main roads. Avoid driving during a winter storm warning or blizzard warning.
